Bacteria can reach the pulp at the center of your tooth due to a cavity or even a crack so small that it could be overlooked during a routine dental exam. That bacteria will create an infection that can result in problems for not only your smile but also your general health. Our dentist, Dr. Nicole Chen, can see you for a root canal treatment in Bakersfield, California, to preserve your tooth. Call Rosedale Dental Studio at 661-501-4746 today.
Do I Need a Root Canal Treatment?
Normally, if damage to your tooth, including a cavity, is quickly addressed, a root canal treatment is not needed. Signs that you may need a root canal treatment can include a toothache or sensitivity to pressure, heat, cold or sweet foods. While the tooth pulp contains the tissues, nerves and blood vessels that keep your tooth healthy, the structure of the tooth itself can be maintained with root canal therapy. This may prevent the need for an extraction.
What Is the Process?
After administering an anesthetic, Dr. Nicole Chen will access the pulp chamber of your tooth. The infected pulp and the nerve in the tooth will be removed, and the pulp chamber will be cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria. Dr. Nicole Chen will then fill the chamber with a medicated material to replace the pulp. In most cases, you will need to return to our office so we can evaluate your progress and protect the tooth with a crown.
Are There Aftercare Instructions?
Dr. Nicole Chen will give you specific instructions on caring for your smile. A cold pack and an over-the-counter pain reliever can help address any discomfort. If you have been prescribed antibiotics, you need to take them as directed and finish the entire prescription. If you experience further pain, swelling, nausea, a fever or chills, contact our office right away.
